Getting away from Bakersfield apartments and stretching your legs a little is a great way to get a feel for your new home. If you really want to make the adventure a real blast, let your four-legged friend tag along! This city happens to be quite dog friendly. While there are places you two won’t be able to go together, there are plenty of dog parks, stores and eateries where well behaved buddies like yours are welcome.

You’re going to find both on- and off-leash opportunities exist in Bakersfield. Kern River County Park – Located on Lake Ming Road this park offers more than 1,000 acres of land to explore. The scenery from the Greenhorn Mountains is quite spectacular here, which is a plus! You will find the park has leash requirements, but enables dogs and their owners to explore the lake, river and picnic areas.
Beach Park – Found at Rosedale Highway and Oak Street, this city park is great for Bakersfield pets and their owners. Dogs, however, must remain on leashes while exploring the park.
Centennial Park – Found on Montclair, just north of Stockdale Highway, this city park offers a leash free area for dogs and their owners. The dog park portion of the park is fenced in so your friend can do plenty of running around and socializing.
Wilson Park – The city-run park can be found at Wilson Road and Hughes Lane. It offers a fenced in dog park where your pet can run around free of the leash. Also, check out the other amenities this park has to offer.

Beyond Bakersfield dog park locations, you and your canine might want to visit some shops and restaurants that are known for being pup friendly. Some top spots to check out include:
PetSmart locations – This national pet store chain has a policy of allowing dogs to shop with their owners. Two locations that might be close to your Bakersfield apartments are 2661 Oswell Street and 4100 Ming Avenue.
Petco – The locations at 8220 Rosedale Highway and 5151 Gosford provide the perfect opportunity for dogs and owners to browse pet friendly items.
Baja Fresh Mexican Grill – With two locations, this Mexican eatery does allow dogs at its outside tables. Make sure pets are well behaved before trying this out though. Baja locations are found at 9660 Hageman Road and 9000 Ming Avenue.
Sub Station – If you have a hankering for a good sandwich and want to bring along your best friend, this eatery might be worth a stop. Found at 5464 California Avenue, the Sub Station welcomes pets at its outdoor tables.
Rosemary’s Family Creamery – If you and your pooch want a cool treat, this is a great place to go. This old fashioned ice cream shop allows dogs at the outside table. Remember to bring your appetite, the portions are huge. Located at 2733 F St.
Mimi’s Café – Located at 4025 California Avenue, Mimi’s offers a New Orleans feel and welcomes dogs along with outdoor diners.
